Technical Reference
How HVLS Fans Work
HVLS fans are defined as ceiling fans exceeding 7 feet in diameter. They operate at low RPM (typically 40 to 200 RPM, roughly 8 mph at the blade tip) and move large volumes of air. A single 24-ft unit can circulate over 300,000 CFM and cover up to 22,000+ square feet.
The principle is simple: large-diameter blades push a column of air downward and outward across the floor. This creates a horizontal airflow pattern that reaches walls and returns along the ceiling, establishing continuous circulation without the turbulence and noise of high-speed fans.
Motor Types
Modern HVLS fans predominantly use permanent magnet synchronous motors (PMSM) in a direct-drive configuration. This eliminates the gearbox, reducing maintenance and failure points. Older units use induction motors with gear-drive systems, which require periodic oil changes and gearbox inspections.
Destratification
In the heating season, HVLS fans run in reverse at low speed to push warm air pooled at the ceiling back down to the occupied zone. This typically reduces the floor-to-ceiling temperature differential from 15 to 20°F down to 2 to 4°F, cutting heating costs significantly.
Sizing
Fan diameter selection depends on ceiling height, floor area, and airflow factor (based on activity level and heat load). A common formula: Room Volume (L x W x H in cubic feet) x Airflow Factor = required CFM, then matched to manufacturer spec sheets. Minimum recommended mounting height is generally 10 ft from floor to blade, with 2+ ft clearance above the fan to the structure.
